COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS PORTFOLIO Graduation Requirement

The Sr. PRESS Project is a college and career readiness portfolio designed to prepare our students for post-secondary success.  

Supplies Needed

Purchase one 1 1/2 OR 2 inch (3-Ring) binder, a pack of eight dividers, and at least fifty transparent sheet protectors.   Divide your notebook into sections as noted below: 

1. Professional Documents
2. Recommendations
3. Certificates and Awards
4. Community Service and Achievements
5. Consumer Education Reflection and Thirteenth Year Plan
6. School Documents
7. Work Samples
8. Reflective Pieces

 

Print the Table of Contents and make this the first page of your project.

Portfolio Assignments
PART I:  Professional Documents
  1. Look through these cover letter templates and samples: Cover Letter Sample Employment and Cover Letter Sample Scholarship. Choose one, print it, and add to your project as a sample..

  2. Using one of the templates or samples above, write your own cover letter. Save it in your school folder or on Google drive as LastNameFirstNameCoverLetter. Print and add it to your portfolio.

  3. Print this Thank You Letter Sample this and add to your project as a sample.

  4. Using the sample as a guide, write your own Thank You for the Interview Letter. Save it in your school folder or Google drive as LastName FirstName Thank You Letter. Print and add it to your portfolio.

  5. Look through these résumé templates and/or samples: Resume Sample One and Resume Sample 2. Using one, write your own résumé, and save it to your student folder or Google drive as LastName First Name Résumé. Print and add it to your portfolio. 

  6. Type a reference sheet. You must have at least three personal and/or professional references. You must include their names, addresses, job title or business, and phone number. Your reference may not be friends or relatives. Save to your folder or Google drive as Last Name First Name Reference Sheet. Print and add it to your portfolio. 

  7. Add all six documents to your PRESS project Part I. We will edit as the year progresses.

PART II:  Letters of Recommendation

Include two letters of recommendation. One must be from a teacher, school professional, mentor, etc.

You cannot use peers or family members as references. 

PART III:  Certificates and Awards

Include copies of all certificates and awards from ninth-to-twelfth grade. These should match what awards are on your vita/resume. 

PART IV:  Community Service/Achievements
  1. Download and complete the Senior Vita Information.doc as a rough draft for your vita. Insert into your project..

  2. Use the Vita Template.doc as a guide, and complete your own vita. Save it to your folder or on Google drive as Last Name First Name Vita. Print and add it to your project.

PART V:  Consumer Education Project

Consumer Education 13th Plan Information

* This plan will be included in your portfolio.
**If you plan to live with a parent or have a scholarship or enter the military, you will still need to research the information in case your situation changes.

 

  1. First, complete the consumer ed. financial plan.docx and the 13 Year Plan.xlsx financial plan annual budget document.  If your plan is to continue your education, then find the website for the university or school of your choice. From that website, fill in the annual expenses for tuition, books and fees, housing costs, transportation, insurance, etc. If your plan is to go straight to the work force or join the military, you will still have expenses (insurance, car, cell phone, etc.) Fill in the expenses based on your research and discussion with parents; be sure to cite your sources in MLA format. You will need a minimum of two sources. Save your documents into your student folder or Google Drive as Last Name First Name Financial Plan AND Last Name First Name 13 Year Plan. Print and add them to your project.

  2. Based on the financial plan, develop a monthly budget: housing, utilities, food, transportation, education/business, savings, medical expenses, personal/fun expenses (hygiene, movies, vacation, etc.). Open the monthly budget document and save to your folder or to Google Drive as Last Name First Name Monthly Budget. Print and add it to your project.

  3. Complete either the Career Virtual Field Trip or the College Virtual Field Trip.  

  4. Include a printed copy of your budget project that you completed in economics.

  5. Write a formal one-page reflection discussing in detail the following questions. In the first paragraph answer this question:  What did you learn? In the second paragraph, answer this question:  How did the research affect your perception of money and expenses? In the third paragraph, answer this question:  Where will you get money? Job? Loans? Scholarship? Other? Be sure to double space, 12 font, Times New Roman, one inch margins. Save to your student folder or Google Drive as Last Name First Name Consumer Education Reflection. Print and add it to your project. 

PART VI:  School Documents
  1. Official transcript printed from INOW/Chalkable.

  2. KUDER report printed from Alabama Career Network.

  3. Write a one page formal essay reflecting on at least one school or community activity in which you participated.  In paragraph one, explain in detail what the activity was.  In paragraph two, explain in detail how you personally and specifically contributed to the activity.  In paragraph three, explain in detail how your participation benefitted you, your school, and/or your community.  Save to your student folder or Google Drive as Last Name First Name School or Community Activity.  Here is a sample:  

PART VII:  Work Samples

Three work samples for different disciplines. These should be high quality and representative of your capability.   They must be graded from the teacher.  They may be from English, science, math, social studies, ag, computer science. career tech, etc.  

PART VIII:  Reflective Pieces
  1. Complete a college application essay. Topics may be found in this document: Senior Project College Essay.docx.  Type using Times New Roman, 12 pt., and double space.  Save in your student folder or Google drive as Last Name First Name Application Essay.

  2. Complete a college or a job application (no SSN). You may include a college acceptance letter instead.

  3. Part of your project is developing a mentoring relationship with an adult who will work with you to explore a career OR completing a community service project. Think about the focus of your project and with whom you would like to work. You will use the Project Focus Review.docx to write about your project and submit to your English teacher for approval. 2. Once your English teacher has given his/her approval, you, your parent, and your mentor will read and sign the mentor agreement.docx. 3. Your mentor will keep up with your hours on the mentor timesheet.docx.  You must have at least six (6) hours documented. 

  4. Project reflection. During the fourth nine weeks, you will write a REFLECTIVE PAPER FOR THE ENTIRE PROJECT.docx.

Download each of these documents, type your responses, and save to your student folder or to Google Drive.using the previously mentioned format. Print them and add to your portfolio in order.
